Brian's Basement Blaincast Ep5 - Celebrating 420 + remix contest

For anyone who remembers The Ghost of Clinton's Tavern on my last album, you may recall a bit of an electronica mash-up in the middle - that was my son the DJ, aka Joel Coi. I made all the tracks/stems available for anyone to remix but I never got any takers.  I wanted to do it again with my brand new song, "Have a Toke" I've been having a lot of fun remixing it myself but I was great to hear what Joel and Pat came up with and who knows, maybe there will be more mixes to come

Brian Blain Basement Blaincast #4

This is a replay of the April 12 (Easter Sunday) episode of the self-isolated socially-distanced Basement Blaincast on Facebook Live.  I called this one my "Tribute to the Townships" and played some tunes I wrote about my life in the Townships and closed with "Ramene Moi Demain" a real anthem to the Townships with lyrics and photos from my great friend Daniel Racine in Waterloo. If you wanted to see/hear the original version of Ramene Moi from 6 years ago it's here.

We had a few glitches but it all adds to the entertainment value - and apologies to the folks who tuned in on Instagram - there was no audio and I was so pre-occupied with the Zoom and the Facebook feeds that I was never able to correct it. Not sure I'm going to try that again (Thanks to Pete Schmidt, Lenna Temmiseva and others for their patience...I hope you found me on Facebook, or here it is on YouTube)

Next Sunday, April 19 (2pm), we celebrate "4-20" and if you don't know what that is, just tune in.  I will be playing my new song, "Have a Toke" and doing the premiere of my remix/mashup of the song which I call "Toke 2".  My son the DJ (aka Joel Coi) and regular collaborator Patrick Merner may (or not) have their remixes to preview as well.  So it will be a bit of electronica on Sunday but, don't worry. I'll have a few folky tunes to kick it off. I'm now thinking the theme for the following will be "Brian goes Country" with a selection of country tunes I've written over the years and a couple of country classics.

Logging In

People used to kid me about not getting my Blainletter out until the day before the gig - well, this time it's coming to you on the same day as the gig - and the gig is my 2pm ET Facebook Live Basement Blaincast, episode 4 in my weekly series since the coronary. If you're not on Facebook, you can replay it here at www.torontobluesdiary.com

Tonight, I'm coming to you from my shotgun shack on Woodfield Road, hunkered down like everybody.  watching  the Thursday streaming concert (from Feb) of Tedeschi Trucks.  This is not "live from a living room" like most of the corona-programming but 2 sets of their terrific band - still in their stride.  Like I said to Derek's daddy when the band was playing the jazz festival here, I said "that boy of yours! Every time he takes a solo he really goes someplace with it,"  ...and, as I write this, he's launching into another great solo. "Scuse me while I kiss this guy"

Next Day - Good Friday!  It was not a good day for Jesus and one remaining artifact of my Catholic upbringing (by the Salesian Brothers) was a special moment at 3pm on Good Friday,  the moment Jesus breathed his last breath on earth.  I always tried to make that a moment to reflect and it never left me - even many decades into my Buddhist practice.  This time, I had just finished doing my Qigong session with Michael Herring.  Every day at 2pm he does a Facebook Live session and I've been joining in every chance I get.  Check it out on his Facebook Page.

And speaking of live streams, I will be going live again on Sunday at 2pm with Episode 4 of the self-isolated socially-distanced Basement Blaincast (though one of these days I'm going to move it out onto the patio). This edition will feature "Songs of the Townships" - prompted by a request for "The Big Fire" (my "exit music" from the Townships and the only tune I've ever had covered). Some of you may remember my pioneering attempts at livestreaming from the back yard.  Who would have thunk that these things would become the main outlet for musicians...

Not everybody is on Facebook but you can always catch a replay on YouTube or on the blog.  I'll put the links to the first 3 right here:

Episode 1 (World Water Day - Launch of my "Water Song" plus my "Mother Trilogy"): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fl9f62HLBmI

Episode 2 (the Maple Blues, You Are Also His Son and "Have a Toke" and a little preview of the remix:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fag6mXNq414

Episode 3 (songs and stories about Prof Piano, Kathi MvDonald and Lenny Breau plus my rendition of the "poem of the times", And The People Stayed Home):

Hopefully as we go along, the production values will improve.  Production values seem to be optional in these days of just trying to put out some songs for the fans.  I'm reminded of a quote from David Lee Roth when I saw him being interviewed way back in the early days of Much Music and he said "it comes down to what can you deliver with just you and your guitar" (or something to that effect).

I've been watching a lot of great streams - just now I started watching Julian Taylor and it was sounding great.  Julian is making his mark - good for him. I'm discovering new sounds and making the best of a bad situation, and I hope you are too!

If you watch those Blaincasts, you'll see a virtual "tip jar" and I'll leave it here, too.

COVID-19 -Day 21 for me

I don't know about you, but I've been spending way more time listening to music (and watching it on the computer)  It's lo fi, but it's real.  It's like when I was introduced to so much music listening to an American radio station with poor reception through a tiny speaker in one of the first "transistor" radios.

some has been rough and ready but that's the real measure of a pro: what can you do with just you and your guitar.  I believe rock icon David Lee Roth said that.

It's 4:10 in the AM over here.  I guess I'm losing track of time - not that anything was ever scheduled around here.  I ended up crashing after supper and waking up at 1am  Part of you just wants to roll over and the other part want's to play music (or watch netflix).

I've done a couple of Facebook Live's and I'm putting them up here for folks who didn't get to see it on Facenook.  Here's the index:

Brian's Basement Blaincast Ep 3

With some tunes I wrote about dearly departed musicians I had a chance to play with, Scott Cushnie "Professor Piano", Kathi McDonald and Lenny Breau. I start with my take on a the poem that's trending about our current situation "And the People Stayed Home" by Kitty O'Meara

Upcoming
Shows

I will be going live again on (Easter) Sunday at 2pm with Episode 4 of the self-isolated socially-distanced Basement Blaincast (though one of these days I'm going to move it out onto the patio).

I call it my "living" album because it started life as a solo "live" recording with bassist George Koller and has now been "sweetened, stacked, mixed and mastered" with new instrumentation on all the songs. It starts with New Orleans marching horns from Alison Young and Colleen Allen on "Forgotten",  “Alice“ gets violin and banjo from Drew Jurecka and Tim Posgate. There's a reggae percussion workout with Trinidadian Wayne Stoute and the wonderful Michelle Josef, some sweet slide from Harry Manx on the French tune, barrelhouse piano from Toronto expat Patrick Godfrey and organ grooves galore from Australian B3 sensation Clayton Doley. "The Ghost of Clinton's Tavern" is a full-tilt electronic ambient remix by my son the DJ.
